So enjoyed this conversation around parenting and stoicism, among other things. I’m illiterate so I can’t speak to Middlemarch. Despite MAGA’s keening ‘for the sake of our children’, Musk and Trump are prime exemplars of an extreme selfishness that cancels effective parenting, meaning helping children to become themselves, and not indoctrinated miniatures. Musk's statement about empathy as harmful says it all. It expresses the utter carelessness held by Dark MAGA whilst fancying themselves manly stoics. Stoics can be humanists, maybe even empathic, and certainly would NOT hold that it's not a problem to consume and destroy Earth and facilitate preventable deaths.
As a sci-fi fan, I'm sorry y'all don't care for it, but totally get it. Elon's Mars obsession is a good example of bad sci-fi. But that flight to Mars is also a piece of cult furniture, the next world promised to members only.
This conversation provided a refreshing break from the wall-to-wall outrage, despair, shock, and hostile sarcasm in my social media feeds today. Somewhere in the first 15 minutes I took a deep breath and realized it had been a long time since I'd done that. Thanks.
Oh, the time we’ve spent on bitter diatribes, sound and fury signifying nothing, when THIS, an examination of how our own creative impulses can usher us forwards despite it all is what we truly need NOW. Let’s collectively pass through the stages of grief over the impending death of an empire and imagine the other side! THANK YOU!
Just Googled "difference between autism and Asperger's Syndrome"....
