Love this podcast!!! I asked Chat if any art has ever been harmed through activism and it turns out that "The Rokeby Venus" by Velázquez was attacked and badly damaged in 1914 by Canadian suffragette Mary Richardson, it soon was fully restored and returned to display. It was attacked again and its protective glass smashed by Just Stop Oil in 2023. Evidently Velázquez or nudes in general attract activism! LOL!
Wish I had someone to talk to this afternoon. "...willing to be hated..." Donald Trump comes immediately to mind. He seems not to care at all what people think of him....but then he is certifiably mentally ill so maybe I want to look for other examples.
I also think about my upbringing in a respectable home by aspiring Negro parents.......every fucking thing in life, every possibility, depended on learning to be nice, on not being hated, not upsetting white people, or alienating authority figures (i.e., potential employers), men (i.e., potential husbands), ....so many gatekeepers, a whole universe to mollify.
Now, at age 70, convinced that the writing is clearly on the wall -- American democracy is over -- I wonder if I can learn to protest at my age. And what to protest? And toward what end?
Wow....thanks for another great program. So much food for thought.
If anyone is wondering if it's time for revolution or not, then please feel free to review this invitation to the United States of America to Wake Up, Grow Up, and Step Up to Our Better Relationships. https://bit.ly/3AZIpUf

Thanks for sharing the precedented damage that JSO caused to the Velázquez, I missed that in the news then.
