This quote about Biden is money. "Instead, he’s a decent, broken-hearted, exhausted old man with a stutter who so far happens to be an excellent president. "
Unfortunately, just about half of the USA has not progressed beyond the reading/believing allegory phase of their intellectual development. Understanding that Biden is an excellent president is a bridge too far for them.
If I may stretch your thread about how understanding facts is a skill beyond understanding allegory. Facts are pesky. The more pesky the facts, the more worthwhile it is to understand how they fit with other facts. People enthralled with grand allegories are willing to entertain the contradictions that are sure to arise, but a set of facts that can't be spun because the underlying mechanisms are difficult to understand is also a bridge too far.
This is such a beautifully written essay. I read it twice in my email, and once on the substack app. I’ll read it again and again. It was a balm. Thank you.
I really loved this piece. It somehow salved my feelings about last night.
Thank you for keeping things in perspective.
