Commenter David Brooks recently described Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as “relatable.” But how could Brooks possibly find a kinship with Walz?
Brooks is supremely upper class; a career-long conservative; an habitué of Manhattan and the Philadelphia Mainline; a graduate of prep school and the University of Chicago; and a clubbable connoisseur of cured meats who left his first wife to marry his assistant, who is 24 years his junior.
Walz is none of these things. He has done none of these things—just as Brooks has never served in the military, benefited from the GI bill, taught high school or coached football, or spent 20+ years as an elected and liberal public servant in Congress and as Minnesota governor.
But they could be brothers because … they’re both white men?
